Knowing God and Seeing Beyond

So often the Spirit of God beckons me to “see beyond.” Every time He does, it alerts me to the fact that either I must have blinders over my eyes, or there is something in the distance He wants me to see. One thing for sure, He always wants us to see beyond ourselves; see beyond our circumstances.

RELEVANCE

God is a forward-looking God. He wants us to see beyond where we are. He wants to draw us to see and desire new things, new possibilities.

I have made you hear new things from this time, even hidden things, and you did not know them” (Isaiah 48:6).

What prevents us from seeing and perceiving new things? Too often it’s our traditions and cultural norms; our social and cultural images. Such creates and feeds pride; being proud of who we are, where we are, or who we are associated with; the group we belong to. Man likes to create boxes, live in boxes and identify with the color, shape and decorations of the box.

I’ll never forget the poster I used to see all over New York City growing up. The majority of the poster was of New York City. On a very tiny sliver on the left side of the poster was the Hudson River; and the rest of the country. I always wondered what life beyond New York was like. Then I moved to Texas; where in a Texan’s mind, there is nothing bigger than Texas.

God loves breaking our molded images. He loves demolishing strongholds that keep us seeing no further than our nose. Imagine what Joshua must have thought, when looking at the formidable walls of Jericho, the LORD said “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor” (Joshua 6:2-3).

God wants us to see Him bigger than life. He is the God of eternal life; the God beyond mortal life. He is always doing and creating new things beyond what we see; and what may be.

REFLECT AND RELATE

What surrounds you? What is your situation? Ask God what He would have you see beyond what is before you.
