Why do we often look upon things with indifference? Is it because we don’t care about a matter? Or is it because we see a particular matter as confusing? What we need to be guarded against is a lack of courage and concern to discover relevant facts for the mere sake of expediency.
RELEVANCE
Discernment is how we sense and perceive things obscure; truth concealed. It is how we use judgment and use critical thinking skills. A whatever attitude says we don’t care to challenge our conscience—exercise our brain and heart to reconcile what our brain is capable of processing and analyzing, and heart is capable of sensing and feeling. In the end, it causes us to sell our self—and those affected by the outcomes of our decisions—short. It’s no wonder God values discernment above most virtues.
We often hear people talk about gray issues; things which can go either way under the circumstances at hand. The attitude often reflected is, “whatever…it doesn’t matter.” In reality, such reflects a cop-out; a lack of courage and heart to discover truth and relevance for the sake of expediency. Gain wisdom and encouragement from the wise man, Solomon.
“My son, if you will receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,
And find the knowledge of God.”
(Proverbs 2:1-5)
The knowledge of God brings new insights and enables you to discover new solutions. It delivers you from accepting random consequences that lead to dismay and discouragement. It keeps you from distractions and entanglements. It gives you confidence and courage, strength and hope to try new things. It sets you free from stagnation and propels you forward so you can realize good fruit and find happiness. The bottom line is, it positions you to be blessed and glorify God.
REFLECT AND RELATE
Think about decisions you quickly brushed over. Think about rash or hasty actions. What were the effects? Were there additional factors that could have been considered? How might you as well as others benefited more had you taken the time to think first, sort through the issues to discern truth more accurately? What would have been the difference?
