We often choose remedies for depression that appear to be therapeutic or in reality, help us avoid dealing with the real and deeper issues. Avoiding confronting the issue that plagues our inner being, however, only causes more harm—to us, and also to people around us. God encourages us to find His solutions.
RELEVANCE
There will always be many processes and resources available that promise a way to satisfaction. One thing the early disciples learned, however, was how to experience God’s way: in sincerity and simplicity of heart; through nurturing relationships.
So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people (Acts 2:46-47).
The root cause of depression will typically point to harmful or fractured relationships; with family, friends and other influential people, as well as critical events that occurred that had significant effects. God’s path to healing will involve several key elements:
- Be honest with yourself, choosing to be healed, seeking God’s way
- Allow the Holy Spirit to reveal real root causes
- Engage with God in a real way to receive His healing
- Have faith as you walk through His process
REFLECT AND RELATE
Ask yourself:
Am I willing and able to visit my earliest traumas?
Are there people who would understand my life and relate with me in a positive way?
Is there a support group who knows the power of God close by?
Am I willing to trust God to heal me?
