Growing in the Image of Christ

People often wonder, what does it mean to be made in God’s image? The Bible says in the beginning God created man in His image and likeness. So, we have been given endowments, or measures of His capacity– His nature and character. Messiah Jesus came as a man expressing the truest form of the nature of God. And, we have the opportunity to grow in these capacities– His capacities.

RELEVANCE

Having been created with endowments expressing God’s capacity, it should inspire you to know that God, therefore, sees a greater capacity in you than you think! The apostle Paul revealed that God has predestined you “to be conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29). Once we confess Jesus as LORD a process begins fashioning us in like nature as the LORD. Paul also related that this process entails being “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

It doesn’t happen automatically, though, without your cooperation and participation. It happens as you engage with God in faith and submit to the working of the Holy Spirit. The more we actively engage with God through prayer and devotion, and respond in faith to the promptings of His word and Holy Spirit, the more the life of God is stirred and stimulated within us, shaping our nature.

REFLECT AND RELATE

How do you think you can cooperate and participate with God in this transformation and conformation process?

What are some ways you can likewise inhibit the process?
