The Acid Test of Deception

We open ourselves to deception when unrighteous desires take root in our heart. That’s why it’s important to discern our motivations. God knows when our desires approach unrighteousness, so His grace offers subtle warnings to our conscience. We then are faced with a choice: resist the temptation of succumbing to the unrighteous desire; or ignore the warning and fall prey to its appeal.

RELEVANCE

When we reject those subtle promptings and allow the desires to take root, the desires have in essence “conceived” or taken form. Our conscience and heart then becomes calloused; too hardened to yield and receive God’s warnings of love, allowing sin to grab hold and entice us. James encouraged believers to embrace this reality.

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (James 1:12-15).

David learned that by appreciating the LORD’S goodness and finding pleasure in His presence, He would impart righteous desires. “Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). In such a manner, we know we are rightly aligned with God. We value what God values. It cleanses our heart and purifies our motives, bringing inner peace and joy.

REFLECT AND RELATE

Gauging what desires are unrighteous entails knowing God’s values; which are very different that ours. God is faithful to reveal righteous values to us. As long as we are willing to check our heart and yield to Him, asking for His truth, He will always respond with GRACE.

Bring your desires to the altar of grace and mercy. Allow the Holy Spirit to adjust your values and priorities.
