Walking in the Fruit of Self-control

Self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit Paul spoke of in Galatians 5:22-26. It, as well as the other virtues listed, are produced as one has crucified or disciplined the flesh with its “passions and desires.” Self-control, therefore, is a function of one’s ability to balance and control emotions, desires and behaviors. How does the Holy Spirit enable us to do this?

The ability to control emotions is affected by internal and external factors. Pressure from the outside is one factor. As far as our internal makeup, we are created with emotional regulators; coping mechanisms that manage emotions. If self-control is lacking there is an internal blockage preventing a balanced response. That’s where the Holy Spirit, God’s healer and comforter, comes in. The key is being able to receive and respond to the Holy Spirit so healing can take place.

RELEVANCE

While psychologists have many ways of dealing with self-control issues, I have seen the LORD heal people willing to be healed. In many cases, a physical and/or psychological trauma has blocked one’s ability to cope and manage emotions. While we typically nurse such internal wounds, real healing occurs when we allow God to go deep to our roots. That requires being able to address the source of the trauma and be willing to allow the Holy Spirit to bring true deliverance. It’s an issue of attacking the pain rather than avoiding or soothing it.

The Bible reveals a key to receiving real healing. It records how Jesus had compassion for the multitudes. Luke 9:11-12 specifically says, “He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.” Jesus did three basic things:

1) He received them with compassion; 2) He spoke truth about the kingdom of God; and 3) He healed them by the power of the Holy Spirit.

When the kingdom of God confronts the kingdom of darkness deliverance and healing are manifested. The issue is manifesting the kingdom of God. It is manifested through compassionate hearts who know God and “the power of His resurrection” (Philippians 3:10). When the truth of the kingdom of God is ministered and received, “the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

REFLECT AND RELATE

Ask God how the reality of the kingdom of God can be manifested in your midst. He desires to manifest His presence and bring healing. Press into Him for truth and He will press into you with His healing power.
