David taught Solomon about the fear of the LORD and value of trusting in God. He came to understand that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). Solomon flowed in wisdom. He learned that God was his source of wisdom and confidence.
“In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence,
And His children will have a place of refuge.
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life,
To turn one away from the snares of death.”
(Proverbs 14:26-27)
RELEVANCE
Solomon learned that God’s wisdom transcends man’s ability to know and understand all. He built the most spectacular structures of his day. Yet he learned that man can only construct things of limited value; at the end of the day proving to be mere vanity.
“Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; and indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind” (Ecclesiastes 2:11).
He learned that God, however, is the ultimate source of durable wisdom; and in His wisdom He proves to be our ultimate source of trust. You can trust that God will, by providence and/or divine instruction, direct you in a secure and viable way.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
REFLECT AND RELATE
Meditate on some paths you have traveled. Can you see God’s divine providence; how He preserved you and led you to safety?
