There is a song about a man who was “looking for love in all the wrong places.” David was a man who journeyed far and wide to find safety from those who sought his death. He learned that man will place trust in all the wrong things and all the wrong places until he places his total trust in God.
RELEVANCE
David, like Paul, learned to abound and to be abased. He learned we can be so familiar with poverty and oppression, that we can begin to expect it and trust in. At the same time, he learned that you can trust in riches, but they too can vanish. Solomon took such thoughts a step further. He experienced the vanity of riches and trusting in it. The bottom line: better to trust in God for real strength, peace, safety and satisfaction in life.
“Do not trust in oppression,
Nor vainly hope in robbery;
If riches increase,
Do not set your heart on them.”
(Psalm 62:10)
“He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;
Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
This also is vanity.
When goods increase,
They increase who eat them;
So what profit have the owners
Except to see them with their eyes?”
(Ecclesiastes 5:10-11)
REFLECT AND RELATE
What have you trusted in that no longer represents a source of peace, satisfaction or security?
