One of our basic human needs is security. God wants us to feel secure. He wants us to make Him our source of security. It may sound a bit ridiculous, since security systems are typically systems of physical instrumentation. Yes, we need physical security against physical predators and thieves. There is also, however, a spiritual enemy out there “seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8-9).
RELEVANCE
Jesus addressed this spiritual thief who seeks to rob people of true life: spiritual life; the new life in Christ through the Holy Spirit, and eternal life. He spoke a profound word about that. He revealed that spiritual security is a higher issue.
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” (John 10:10-11).
David spent years running from those who sought to kill him. He knew the LORD as his shepherd. He knew the protection of the Shepherd. He knew God to be his ultimate source of security.
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies…”
…As for God, His way is perfect;
The word of the LORD is proven;
He is a shield to all who trust in Him.”
(Psalm 18:2-30)
REFLECT AND RELATE
What sources do place trust in for your security?
Examine how much trust you truly ascribe to God. Ask Him to reveal Himself as your ultimate source of security.
