The Power of an Engaged Conscience

God has a way of interrupting our life and intervening in our affairs. He seeks to capture our attention and draw us into engagement with Him. He does it to create a sense of awe about Him, and cause us to wonder about something beyond us, something bigger than life as we know it. So, He then awaits our response. He tests our conscience and will.

Sometimes God’s interruptions are so obvious, it would be nearly impossible not to notice them (unless you are totally numb and desensitized or the type of person who considers all wonders and divine events as mere coincident). Sometimes God’s divine occurrences are so subtle, they do require especially sensitive and observant eyes and ears to discern.

Paul, on the other hand, would say God’s “invisible attributes are clearly seen” so we are “without excuse” to understand the things of God (Romans 1:20). Truly, God does challenge us to be observant to see with eyes of understanding and listen attentively for the voices of heaven speaking to our heart, tugging on our conscience to engage with God and respond.

RELEVANCE

God interrupted Moses’ life by speaking within a burning bush in the wilderness; and accosted Paul by speaking within a light shining around him on the road to Damascus.

He captured my attention one day through two connected events in a Brooklyn apartment building lobby and down the block in front of a church. How has He interrupted and intervened in your life?

God loves action-filled events just as we do! He seeks to spark the flame and ignite our passions to cause us to arise and awaken from our otherwise “normal” life; to see something beyond our self and bigger than life as we know it. Through such events and engagements God brings us into His grip, connects with our heart and sets our conscience free from constraints and bondages that limit our capacity to experience His amazing grace and the life He created us to experience.

REFLECT AND RELATE

In what ways has God been stirring your conscience?

Are there recent events He might want you to connect to see a big picture or a pattern?

Is there a puzzle to which God is providing pieces to tell you a story?

How have you been acknowledging God’s interaction in your life and responding to His prompting and beckoning?
