As we relate with our world, we will face choices daily. We may not realize it, but the most crucial choices are those that cause us to choose to honor God or man. The more we come to learn and understand God’s truths and ways, the more sensitive we will be to knowing when we are honoring God and when we are not.
Why does it matter? As God’s word says, “those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed” (1 Samuel 2:30-31). It’s truly a matter of winning God’s approval and favor.
RELEVANCE
In Numbers 22 we read the story about Balak, king of the Moabites, who was fearful of the Hebrew people who had come out ofEgypt. He was concerned that they might come and make war with him. Knowing a man named Balaam had certain spiritual powers, he promised him great honor to curse them. Balaam, however, responded: “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.”
Needless to say, Balaam was certainly tempted; especially as Balak raised the price. The size of the stakes will always affect our decision-making process; and reveal the measure of integrity of heart. The situation caused him to encounter God and ultimately make a choice. He learned the hard way that regardless of the stakes, it is far better to honor God above man. Truly, God’s reward will always bring a greater ultimate reward.
REFLECT AND RELATE
Read the story in Numbers 22-24. Then read and meditate on Matthew 6:24-34. Ask God to reveal to you facets of His earthly and eternal reward system.
