The Caveat to Being Entrusted with Authority

Before one can be entrusted with authority, trustworthiness must be demonstrated. It takes being proved under authority; as authority in God’s eyes is an issue of stewardship and compliance. For this reason Paul exhorted believers to understand the truth about authority.

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves” (Romans 13:1-3).

It does not matter whether we like those we see in authority or not. God commands us to respect authority. He uses all types of people for all types of reasons. Truly, God allows and appoints authority and placement of people for His sovereign purposes; if anything, to keep us humble and seek Him for truth, justice and promotion.

RELEVANCE

In Matthew 8:9 and Luke 7 we see a story about a centurion for whom Jesus performed a miracle. It was one of a few places where He marveled, or was moved with such strong faith. As He observed the man, the centurion revealed something about his character. He said, “I also am a man under authority.” His response showed his insight and integrity.

He understood that before the LORD could release His authority, He needed to know the man understood the truth about authority. Jesus saw more than shallow faith. He saw the man valued authority and understood that it is a necessary component of order. He had respect for the power it wielded. He also saw genuine trusting faith, moral conviction, sincerity of heart—integrity of heart.

REFLECT AND RELATE

Think about authority figures you know; especially those under whom you have served. PRAY for them. Meditate on their character; what you observe and why you suppose God has them in authority. As you do, allow God to surprise you. He may reveal things to you beneath the surface; things about their character or His greater purposes.
