Sensing and Obeying God’s Gentle Touch

The Bible tells a story of Elijah, how he called fire down from heaven and killed hundreds of false prophets. It was a big show. Yet, shortly thereafter, we see him hiding in a cave. The account says, “a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. That soft peaceful voice set him on his next mission: to anoint the next kings of Israel and Syria; and Elisha as prophet. What might your next mission be?

RELEVANCE

God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, is gentle and peaceful. He whispers in our inner sanctum. He trusts that our vessel is clean enough to hear the subtle whisper as it echoes inside. He seeks to guide us ever so gently. He beckons us with impressions and words that seem to come out of no where yet have the power of God upon them.

Truly the Holy Spirit is gentle and seeks to hold the reigns to our heart in a gentle way. He won’t control us by force; but will act as the small rudder looking for us to respond to His gentle touch.

“Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires” (James 3:3-5).

REFLECT AND RELATE

The world is filled with all sorts of noises, yet the Spirit of God somehow is able to penetrate through all these filters and gain our attention. Listen attentively, my friend; listen attentively. Is the Holy Spirit speaking to you now?
