We live in a world where others will judge us. They will judge what we say and do, how we say it and do it, and even beyond, try to guess our motivations—why we act the way we do. All this sets us up to harbor the desire to be judged favorably; but beyond—to feel accepted, want recognition and impress others—all leading us into temptation of seeking other forms of self gratification and vanity. It is Satan’s and the world’s way of trapping us to be disqualified before God—the only One we need to please.
RELEVANCE
Somebody once asked Paul Wilbur, a gifted worshiper and recording artist, how he consistently writes such anointed worship songs. He replied, “I seek to please an audience of one.” That’s the heart of a mature man of faith.
The LORD Himself, acted to please none but One—the Father. Paul encouraged believers to keep the same mindset.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:5-8).
REFLECT AND RELATE
Look carefully at what is referred to as “the LORD’s prayer.” It all reflects a heart seeking God’s kingdom and will; not man’s; that He—His kingdom and power—be glorified. That’s why we ask not to be led into temptation.
