Humility: Prerequisite to Honor

When one is honored, they are viewed with respect; typically in high regard, often lifted up in recognition of some accomplishment or achievement. Honor reflects a genuine perception of one’s dignity; and expects a response of humility. How do we test for honor?

A test of whether one is truly worthy of honor is found in their every-day responses. Pride, the opposite of humility, issues in self-glory. Sometimes it can be camouflaged, but ultimately reveals itself. True honor reflects God’s honor. Since God will not be mocked, He will not allow pride to disguise itself without judgment. His word is clear on this. Solomon addressed this topic big time.

“When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2).

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

RELEVANCE

God values wisdom, which is why true wisdom issues in humility. God’s word is clear: real wisdom issues in the fear of God; genuine honor and respect for God’s word and ways.

“The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility” (Proverbs 15:33).

“A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor” (Proverbs 29:23)

The most humbling thing is to be honored by man; but then humbled through correction by God. He sees all and knows all. Thing is; man’s honor can last for a moment, but God’s correction can bring you down a long and winding path. God’s honor does issue in grace. He seeks a lasting change of heart and mindset. That’s because real honor is a reflection of your relationship with God.

REFLECT AND RELATE

How have you responded when others have honored you? How does it make you feel; in the short term and long run? Regardless, look to God for grace. His grace will lead you forward.
