One way we subject ourselves to bondage is being entangled with people or projects that consume our time, energy and resources. Sometimes it’s difficult to break free because the entanglements are so deep or intertwined, that it takes time to unravel or unwind the pieces. Such pieces can include a web of lies, misguided relationships or financial obligations.
In any case, God’s wisdom and discernment is required. Does He want us to reconcile and unwind the pieces or simply cut the cord and break free totally from the situation? The first step is to seek Him and allow His truth to enter the equation.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1).
RELEVANCE
Breaking free from bondage is one thing. Staying free is another. We will always be subjected to people with ideas wanting to influence us, sell us something or bring us into their world. The key is keeping our own desires and motivations pure and in line with the wisdom and knowledge of God. That can be difficult when we crave something; for then we open ourselves to the whims and desires of others. Peter spoke on this.
“For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning” (2 Peter 2:20-21).
When that yellow caution light goes on or when you are in doubt on whether or not to participate in some activity, ask the Holy Spirit for discernment and wisdom. Wait on God for peace.
REFLECT AND RELATE
Often there are strongholds keeping us in constraint. Meditate on 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 and 2 Timothy 3. Ask God to reveal the strongholds, “every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God,” and how to bring your thoughts into His captivity— compliance and alignment with His and the way of His kingdom. Pray for wisdom, discernment and the appropriate action.
