God loves when His people prosper. He will test our motives, though, and our allegiances. He looks to find contentment in Him. He will, therefore, test our commitment to Him or our prosperity—our stuff and our success. He will test for covetousness, lust and greed to see the objects of our affections, the affections we serve: God or mammon.
RELEVANCE
Through Abraham and Lotwe have a simple illustration. Conflict arose between Abraham’s herdsmen and those of his nephew, Lot. To preserve the peace, Abraham suggested that he andLot separate. Being able to trust God, Abraham was content to release Lot and give him first choice. Lot saw how rich the plains of Jordan were and chose that land. What he didn’t know, was that the land that appeared to be beautiful was in fact filled with the sinful men of Sodom. He would soon discover the evil it would bring.
Interestingly enough, as soon asLot departed, God immediately told Abraham to look up and see the land of his inheritance! He gave him an incredible promise and told him to scout out the land that was to be his.
What we see is a contrast in perspectives. Lot acted by sight, and Abraham acted by faith.Lotwas motivated by carnal desires and walked by his emotions. He lusted for Sodom, thus responded to external influences and appearances. Abraham was motivated by the fear of the Lord and put his trust in God’s placement. He trusted in God’s sovereignty. He had a free and giving heart, and the liberty to give Lot first choice. God appreciated his heart and rewarded his choices, blessing him tremendously.
