Grasping Hold of a Source of Confidence Beyond Self

The world teaches us to be self-confident. On the other hand, many people lack confidence, and have little confidence in themselves. At the end of the day, God will prove Himself to be our greatest and most true source of confidence and strength.

RELEVANCE

A wise person will empty all self-confidence from the soul and place total trust and confidence in the LORD GOD. David learned this and passed it onto his son, Solomon; who once attributed the wisest of all, truly learned that lesson late in life.

“God has spoken once,
Twice I have heard this:
That power belongs to God.
Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy;
For You render to each one according to his work.”
(Psalm 62:11-12)

Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
For the LORD will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.
(Proverbs 3:25-26)

In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence,
And His children will have a place of refuge.
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life,
To turn one away from the snares of death.
(Proverbs 14:26-27)

Why do we find it difficult to trust in God’s help? Perhaps we have difficulty believing in the present and active ministry of the Holy Spirit. One major reason Jesus died on the Cross and was resurrected was so that the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, would be our very present and active source of strength and enablement. How it behooves us to believe this and trust His word.

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you” (John 16:7).

REFLECT AND RELATE

Can you give God the benefit of the doubtand put all your confidence in God’s ability?

Look back at your past successes. Can you see where your strength came from God?

Look back at your past failures. To what might you attribute the source of those failures?

Look finally to God– His Spirit, the Holy Spirit– the Rock of truth and confidence.
