God’s Goodness Brings Victory over Pride

Knowledge is good. But too much knowledge can fill one’s head with pride. It must, therefore, be kept in check with humility, which allows God to bring exaltation His way.

“Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him” (1 Corinthians 8:1-3).

RELEVANCE

Pride conceals our deepest desires and fears. God’s Spirit, however, tugs on our heart to reveal truth and bring us to repentance before Him. He simply looks for us to come clean before Him and confess our inner motivations, desires and fears; then turn towards righteousness—which is found in Christ. That’s the real repentance David discovered.

“Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.”
(Psalm 19:12-14)

“The humble He guides in justice,
And the humble He teaches His way.
All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth,
To such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.
For Your name’s sake, O LORD,
Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.”
(Psalm 25:9-11)

REFLECT AND RELATE

Allow God to take you through a pride inventory. Ask Him to reveal the deep things of your heart. Then receive the LORD’s comfort, forgiveness and restoration as you repent.
