Loyalty is an interesting concept; much misinterpreted and misrepresented in today’s world. The biblical term loyal connotes something complete, full, just, perfect, whole. It comes from the Hebrew root word shalom, meaning wholeness, prosperity, peace. Faithfulness connotes trustworthiness. It connects to honor. How do we connect loyalty, trust and honor?
In relationships we want and expect people to be loyal and faithful so we can trust them; and as a result, experience something good, just and fruitful. Reality is we typically see more of a double-standard. God would have us, however, be Christ-like and uphold His standards: loyalty, faithfulness and integrity—to Him first and to others.
RELEVANCE
David, the man after God’s own heart, though not perfect, best modeled these standards. His loyal heart towards God set an example and won the loyalty of the people around him.
“All these men of war, who could keep ranks, came to Hebron with a loyal heart, to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel were of one mind to make David king” (1 Chronicles 12:38).
When it came time for David to pass the baton to Solomon, dedicate the building materials for the temple and give Solomon his charge, the people likewise responded with loyalty and faithfulness. “Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the LORD; and King David also rejoiced greatly” (1 Chronicles 29:9).
We expect loyalty in relationships. We are expected to be loyal to those in authority. We earn it best, though, by walking in honor; exhibiting admirable and respectful qualities, and character reflecting integrity and courage. Jesus perfectly modeled such qualities, and set an example to follow after.
