One of the most difficult reality checks is the source of our confidence; what we place our confidence in. Is it self; our ability, mind or creativity; another person; an organization; government; money; or God? The truth is, the answer is often buried deep within our heart.
RELEVANCE
As we look deep within our heart, the answer is not readily apparent. One of Israel’s greatest kings, Hezekiah, was confronted by the Assyrian king regarding the source of his confidence; specifically in whom he placed his confidence. He suspectedEgypt; specifically the security, protection and strengthEgyptrepresented. He further mocked Hezekiah, testing his trust in God. Hezekiah searched deep within his soul. He brought his case before God.
Besides the stories of Jesus recounted in parallel gospels, this one of Hezekiah is the only other story recorded in three different books of the Bible. God had a good reason. Hezekiah dealt with one of the most difficult issues we will deal with.
“What confidence is this in which you trust? I say you speak of having plans and power for war; but they are mere words. Now in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? Look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed,Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king ofEgyptto all who trust in him” (Isaiah 36:4-6).
We can place confidence in people, organizations, our job, finances or any other source. Ultimately all such sources will prove to be fragile, shallow and inferior to God. They may give us a sense of security and comfort, but the sense may only be an illusion. David learned that lesson. He passed it on to his son, Solomon, who had to learn the hard way.
“It is better to trust in the LORD
Than to put confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the LORD
Than to put confidence in princes.
(Psalm 118:8-9)
