Moses, the man noted for seeing God face to face, witnessed the most incredible miracles recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures or Old Testament. He had seen enough of God’s power to know what one critical thing to ask of God: a heart of wisdom.
“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).
While God says He will restore what has been stolen from us, He can restore things lost over time but He can’t restore time; for it moves forward moment by moment. Moses asked a good thing: for the wisdom not to waste precious time; the wisdom to take dominion over time.
RELEVANCE
David, the man after God’s own heart, also witnessed great moments of God. He knew God intimately. He experienced an incredible relationship with God. He experienced life in God. He likewise learned the right thing to ask of God: a heart totally united with God.
“Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name” (Psalm 86:11).
David learned what it meant to be united with God. He learned that it means to walk in the fear of the LORD; be united with God’s values. It also means apprehending God’s perspective or view of things. It means to submit to God as LORD; His ultimate authority. It means to worship Him and value as truth His word. It means to honor Him as Creator and acknowledge Him as the source of life and all resources. These things, David learned brought more than happiness, but real satisfaction and true joy found in relaionship with the Lord.
REFLECT AND RELATE
Moses and David learned a lot from their experience with God. How do you see things from their perspective? How will it help you form opinions and make decisions?
