While the world often measures success in terms of results regardless of the means, sovereign God still ultimately judges based on true character and integrity. He, therefore, looks to those open and willing to cultivate virtue and upright character.
RELEVANCE
David, the man after God’s own heart, wasn’t perfect; but time after time demonstrated a heart open to correction and desire to be found pleasing to God. He grew from a shepherd boy into Israel’s greatest king; and became the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. What kind of attitude did he maintain? With what kind of heart did he approach God?
For one thing, he consistently sought God’s truth and wanted to be found right with God. He would ask, “show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me” (Psalm 25:4-5). One key thing he did learn is that God values integrity. “Let integrity and uprightness preserve me..” (Psalm 25:21).
David learned he couldn’t keep anything from God. He knew he had to first be true to self; honest with himself. God already knew all! He looked inward to discover what God already knew about him. He learned it’s a matter of allowing God to shine His searchlight on the heart; then confessing what the Holy Spirit revealed. Hear his heart regarding approaching God.
Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord?
Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?
Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,
speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
Those who refuse to gossip
or harm their neighbors
or speak evil of their friends.”(Psalm 15:1-3 NLT)
