Throughout life we will have many teachers, instructors, coaches, counselors and mentors. Some we will like and some we will loathe. But we will learn something from all of them. What we learn and take away will contribute more than knowledge. It will help fashion our character.
RELEVANCE
Two mentoring relationships that are highlighted in the Bible are those of Moses and Joshua; and Elijah and Elisha. Joshua served Moses faithfully in the wilderness throughout the journey to the Promised Land. Before leading the children of Israel across the Jordan to conquer kings and possess the land, God gave him an awesome promise: “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and of good courage…” (Joshua 1:5-6).
Elisha walked faithfully with Elijah. Their relationship also came to the point of transition at the Jordan. After crossing, Elisha asked Elijah for a double portion of his anointing. He received it, and walked throughout the land being a blessing to others in the power of God.
Many years later, we see Moses and Elijah being transfigured with Jesus. Both had faithfully served God until their baton was handed off to one who would advance God’s purposes further, bringing glory and honor to God. More than focusing on their works or performance, however, God would have us keep in mind two key points:
> As we are faithful throughout the learning process and in the little things, God will be faithful to lead us in His power to advance His purposes that He be glorified;
> The character and virtue fashioned in us through the process often becomes more valuable than the knowledge or skills learned.
REFLECT AND RELATE
As you teach or are being taught, keep God’s bigger purposes in mind. What are you learning this season from your teacher…from God?
