Apprehending a Passionate Heart of Worship

The man after God’s own heart, David, had a deep sense of the meaning of worship. He wasn’t a religious man by traditional measures, but He knew God. He was real with God, and approached God with passion and intensity. That’s what God looks for in us: a heart that simply wants to know Him and engage with Him in a real way.

RELEVANCE

David had a deep love for God. He related with God in a dynamic way and worshiped from a humble and sanctified heart—one devoted to God. One thing he understood and embraced was the value of God’s presence and power. He relied totally on God. His psalms, therefore, serve to portray a beautiful picture of a heart totally yielded to God.

“One thing I have desired of the LORD,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD,
And to inquire in His temple.
For in the time of trouble
He shall hide me in His pavilion;
In the secret place of His tabernacle
He shall hide me;
He shall set me high upon a rock.”
(Psalm 27:4-5)

David truly gave God all due honor. “Ascribe unto the Lord, O you mighty ones, ascribe unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in the majesty of holiness” (Psalm 29:1-2).

He also maintained an open, soft and surrendered heart before God; willing to be broken, humbled, and corrected. “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

While he made plenty of mistakes, He desired to keep right with God, seeking the LORD’s examination and correction. “Examine me, O LORD, and try me; try my mind and my heart” (Psalm 26:2). He truly set an example of one worshiping God in spirit and truth.

REFLECT AND RELATE

If you want to know God in a truly intimate way, meditate on David’s psalms. They reveal his passion and intense way he sought after God.
