Experience the Grace and Strength of Christ’s Overcoming Joy

David is our master trainer to learn how to grow in our relationship with the Lord. His life is a testimony of someone who endured numerous conflicts yet learned how to overcome in God’s abundant grace and apply the realities of His truth. His faith was grounded in total trust in God. He learned how to find joy during severe trials. This enabled him to overcome every situation he encountered.

But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You;

Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;

Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You.

(Psalm 5:11)

RELEVANCE

Life brings us all to various kinds of trials and types of hardship. We experience a wide variety of types of conflict as conflict surrounds us. Some bring tremendous pain to our heart. Some bring confusion and uncertainty. But if we can learn to trust God in all things we will experience His amazing grace and comfort as He defends and protects us and provides for us the answers and solutions we need. Embracing this truth helps us overcome curve balls and the trials of life.

David embraced a particular reality of a vibrant relationship with God. He understood God’s concept of inheritance. He knew deep inside that God has plans and purposes designed for us. That’s why Jesus emphasized that we pray that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Yes, we have been given free will to pursue our desires, dreams and goals. However, if we can grasp hold of the fact that God has greater and higher—heavenly plans and purposes for us we will learn to pursue things that bring us greater joy and peace of soul than we can imagine.

Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust…5 O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot.…Yes, I have a good inheritance…9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope…11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:1-11)

So, as we pray, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” we seek His will. That’s why Jesus said…

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8).

As you pray, allow the Holy Spirit—our Helper and Comforter—to arise in you to feel God’s presence—His comfort and peace. The presence of the Holy Spirit is God’s great promise and very real gift to us!

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.  27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:26-27)

Yes, it’s hard to be joyful amid conflict, hard trials, suffering and pain. That’s why the Bible says joy can be a sacrifice. But as we can trust God by faith, we can receive and feel the comfort of the Holy Spirit. This enables us to receive His grace and inner strength to muster up joy—God’s secret sauce to endurance and overcoming.

Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord. 8 When You said, “Seek My face,” My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.”

(Psalm 27:6-8)

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

Call upon the Holy Spirit—invite the Holy Spirit to pour out the gift of grace and comfort Christ promises us. Ask Him to reveal truth to your heart. Let His truth bring you the amazing grace of His peace.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 4:6-7)

Pressing Forward in God’s Grace and Truth for God’s Glory

The Bible is full of stories that depict the grace of God being poured out on His people. God truly wants to pour out grace to encourage you to press forward and advance in the things He shows you. Your Heavenly Father truly wants to give you great confidence. He truly has your best interest in His heart.

On the one hand, we recognize His grace as His unmerited favor. Beyond the favor of God, though, God’s grace is about His empowerment through the active presence and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth three times. The Holy Spirit sheds light on God’s truths, offering us the best source of true wisdom. Even in times of weakness, Jesus encourages us to receive God’s strength.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness”

(2 Corinthians 12:9)

As God pours His empowering grace upon us and through us God is glorified. We witness God’s glory, His splendor and magnificence. The people who participated in King David’s service experienced God’s glory in powerful ways. They had courage, and encourage us by sharing their experience with us.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. (Psalm 84:11)

RELEVANCE

Jesus wants us to experience His grace and truth, His glory, His beauty, splendor, power, miracles and joy—on earth as it is in heaven. His first disciples experienced this. God was glorified as His grace was poured out and experienced. Beyond seeing the favor of His grace, His grace was validated by demonstrating and proving God’s Word, His truths, His promises. The disciples got to experience God’s grace and truths being expressed and revealed in living color. It encouraged them to press forward, even through conflict and difficulties. The Holy Spirit brought them great joy and peace!

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

There’s so much balance to be found in God’s grace and truth. If we emphasize grace alone, we can be blind to falsehood and walk in deception. On the other hand, if we focus strictly on truth, we can become cold, hardened and dogmatic. Jesus expressed the perfect balance of grace and truth.

God is glorified as we walk in His grace and truth. He is glorified through the grace gifts of the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of truth—manifested in and through us. He is glorified as we exemplify His grace and truth as we walk in love and truth, or compassion and integrity. God is love and truth.

Truth, though, is often debated. Some people believe truth is relative to one’s perspective. We can perceive truth differently. In God’s grace, however, truth can be discerned and revealed. It takes trusting faith in God. So, in God’s grace we can point people to truth. And in His truth we gain wisdom and good judgment. That brings us true inner peace and joy. Thankfully, in His grace and truth we can overcome conflict and the trials of life.

He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. (Deuteronomy 32:4)

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

Consider some decisions you have made. Reflect on the decisions that have resulted in good and bad outcomes. How can you relate when you receive grace? Where can you see grace and truth in the situation? How is the Holy Spirit showing you how to move forward?

Walking in the Grace of God’s Great Love, Truth and Redemption

There is a grace of the hope of redemption that God imparts to spark us to hunger for God, and for His best for us. We all fall short of God’s desires for us, for His best for us, even something we think we are supposed to be or do. It’s part of human nature to feel guilty or condemned for not living up to something we think we are supposed to be or do what we are supposed to do, or for sins we’ve committed. But the grace and truth of Christ will lift us above self-condemnation, guilt and shame.

Truly, we are offered the most powerful grace known to mankind. It’s the grace of God’s redemption. Yes, Christ’s ultimate sacrifice justifies us and paves the way of our redemption. Truly, our vindication and validation were bought by the precious blood of Christ. It’s our gift for the receiving.

…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:23-25)

RELEVANCE

Justice is something we all look for. We crave seeing wrongs made right, especially when it comes to injustices we feel were done to us. So, God’s grace and truth always brings redemption. Yes, it usually takes time. But it’s ours for the asking. And Jesus would have us keep asking, seeking and knocking.

God’s redemption is also evident in giving us second chances for mistakes we’ve made, or when we’ve failed—at anything. God is truly the God of second chances. And three, even more! It’s in His nature to provide abundant grace and redemption.

But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious,

Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

(Psalm 86:15)

I’ve made my fair share of mistakes in life. Yet, time after time, after I confess and receive God’s correction and insights, God shows grace and redemption. Truly, despite our shortcomings, failures, and mistakes, God recognizes Jesus’ sacrifice for our redemption. It’s the basis for our reconciliation with Him.

We cannot earn God’s grace. And we don’t have to. No matter how hard we strive nothing can merit the gift of God’s grace. It’s a gift of His awesome love that keeps on giving. Our part is turning to God, confessing our shortcomings, receiving His grace and mercy and the expectancy of His redemption. Yes, for every negative thing that happens to us we have the opportunity to see and experience God’s redemption. Thank you, Jesus!

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

What redemption do you desire? What second chance do you need? What justice do you seek? Seek the Lord. Call upon Him. Meditate on His goodness, His mercy and grace. Allow expectancy in you to grow inside. He won’t fail you. God doesn’t fail. It’s against His nature. His heart is for us to overcome. And Jesus overcame death and the grave for us! Open your heart to receive His great love, His grace and truth. Experience the grace of His resurrection life and redemption.

Living in the Grace and Truth of the Resurrection Life of Jesus

The greatest blessing offered to us is living in grace and truth of the resurrection life of Christ. Consider the powerful revelation that Paul caught. He refers to it as “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

RELEVANCE

So, what is “Christ in you, the hope of glory”? For one thing, it is living in the reflection of Christ’s magnificence, His beauty, His light. More importantly, it is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit within you.

Truly, the Holy Spirit always points to Jesus. However, Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit as the Comforter dwelling in us, guiding us, strengthening us, empowering us with a host of grace gifts.

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever —   17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17)

“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. (John 15:26)

…when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.  14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. (John 16:13-14)

As we grow in Christ and yield—or submit—to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit grows fruit within us. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

We also come to learn God’s perspective of things. So, we learn that hope from God’s perspective speaks of certainty, something based on God’s promises, truths and faithfulness. This builds our faith. It enables us to gain confidence and trust—in God. Truly, God’s Word sealed by the Holy Spirit within us gives us confidence that we can trust in God’s faithfulness.

So, living in Christ’s resurrection life brings us to experience the resurrection life or new life of the Spirit. This is an awareness of the Holy Spirit’s presence, joy and activity in our life. It is a mystery until we truly experience Pentecost—the promises of God’s Word and Spirit converging in a personal and real way through God’s grace transmitted in His love—in His resurrection power. 

In addition, through His resurrection life in us through the presence of the Holy Spirit, we find some of the greatest revelations and expressions of the Christian life as God meant them to be expressed. We get to experience the reality of grace and truth in Christ. So, we see the greater reality of what Paul expresses to encourage us to live in great hope.

It’s also where we find our greatest strength developed in His grace and joy, even resilience to combat the intense forces of darkness that work to knock us down and knock us out. Furthermore, it’s where we find solutions in Christ to overcome the darkness of fears, rejection, negativity, depression, ambivalence and arise victorious through all sorts of hardships. Yes, His grace and truth is truly glorious!

It’s where we also find faith and stamina to endure and overcome all situations. We can see strongholds in our life demolished and argumentative thoughts and high things of pride contrary to God’s thoughts, will and way brought down. We also experience our mind brought into the captivity of the obedience of Christ—or come into alignment with God’s higher thoughts and higher ways. (2 Corinthians 10:4-6)

In summation, it’s where we find God’s solutions to experience the new life in Christ by exchanging the falsehoods of the philosophies and ideologies of the world with the higher truths, spiritual realities, principles and wisdom of God. (Romans 1:25; John 3:30) It’s also where we see the dynamics of the kingdom of God working in real-time and bringing pivotal paradigm shifts in our life.

This is what the first century church experienced. “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33) This same resurrection life is available to all of us. It comes through active faith in Christ, believing and trusting in His promises.

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

Spend some time meditating on what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit in John 14:15-18; John 15:26; John 16:12-15. Invite the Holy Spirit to stir you in God’s great love. Know that the Holy Spirit is the presence of God dwelling inside you.

Connecting to God’s Grace and Truth Brings Awesome Freedom

Connecting to God’s Grace and Truth Brings Awesome Freedom

As humans created by God in His image and likeness, we were made to live in relationship with God and walk in the covenant blessings of His grace and truth. We talk, we laugh, we share stories and experiences. Sharing life has a way of knitting us or binding us together with others. It gives life more meaning. It gives us positive vibes. It strengthens our sense of purpose. The more we experience this through Jesus, however, the more we experience life as He intended. He calls this life “more abundantly.”

There’s a special grace we especially feel when we connect with someone who relates with us, and with whom we can relate. It gives us a sense of belonging. It adds meaning to our life. It makes us feel like we are connected to something beyond ourselves. Yet connecting with Jesus brings a greater sense of joy and a real freedom the world longs for.

RELEVANCE

Consider Jesus as your High Priest giving you great feelings of real joy and great freedom. When you think about it, He can relate with you more than anybody else. He knows us from God’s perspective of being our Creator. So, He can relate with us in a unique way. Therefore, consider something the book of Hebrews says about Jesus.

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)

Jesus experienced all types of emotions in dealing with all types of people. Some loved him, but many despised him, rejected him and mocked him. He encountered real temptations. Many tried to trick him and entrap him. He endured great drama. Yet he overcame in all situations. Today He sits on the throne in heaven as our King, High Priest and Lord. He pours out grace and truth to help us overcome in life. So, He waits for us to come before Him for every need and with every concern.

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)

The freedom He offers is a freedom greater than the world knows about. It’s a freedom found in the very presence of the Holy Spirit. It’s freedom that comes from knowing deep truths; truth that overcomes the fallout from falsehood and deception. It’s freedom from guilt and condemnation. It’s freedom from anger and bitterness. It’s freedom from unforgiveness, which keeps us in the grip of bondage more than we like to think.

Yes, as our King and High Priest, we are offered the opportunity to come boldly before Him and ask for every kind of help we need. We can discuss any issue and receive grace and truth that will permeate our being and console our soul. He knows the deep truths—about people, about situations, about us. He knows our frame, our history, even what’s ahead. He speaks with authority.

Therefore, we can benefit from “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). He offers us grace and truth that will truly set us free in more ways than we can imagine.

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

Spend some time meditating on what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit in John 14:15-18; John 15:26; John 16:12-15. Invite the Holy Spirit to stir you in God’s great love. Know that the Holy Spirit is the presence of God dwelling inside you. The Holy Spirit lives in you to connect you to God in a real and powerful way. That’s why Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Comforter, guiding us in all truth; a truth that is liberating beyond every boundary known to mankind. Be blessed as you do!

Receiving God’s Abundant Grace to Do All You Do

God offers to pour out great grace and truth in the midst of all sorts of pressures to do all we do throughout our day. This comforts us. It brings peace of soul. Truly, the peace and strength of the Holy Spirit, God’s presence in us, is a real source of grace and strength to help us do whatever we are doing. That’s why in John 16:7 Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Comforter/Helper.

Truly, the Holy Spirit is God’s very presence in our heart. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth three times because His Spirit in us guides us in all truth as we ask Him for it. He pours God’s love into our heart and illuminates our mind with God’s solutions. Truly, the Holy Spirit is God’s joyful presence to guide us in God’s awesome grace and truth!

Paul encourages us that “God is truly able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8).

RELEVANCE

We don’t always think God can provide practical solutions to us in times of need. However, the Bible is full of stories where God’s people have called upon Him for help and solutions in times of need. We first see this in the stories of the patriarchs, the family through whom God established His covenant of grace—Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

In Genesis 12 we see that God initiated a covenant with Abraham. It is a covenant promising blessing and fruitfulness to Abraham’s descendants. Abraham endured great trials. However, in Genesis 17:6 God says to Abraham, “I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you…” This is why Abraham is known as the father of faith. So, in a time of famine Abraham goes to Egypt. Over time God’s grace is poured out and he comes out rich in livestock. Then at 100 years old God pours out more grace and he and his barren wife Sarah conceive a son, Isaac. Then at another time of grace God provides a ram to be the sacrifice God had called for.

Isaac also experienced God’s grace in powerful ways. The Bible recounts his story of digging wells during great opposition. In Genesis 26:3 God says to Isaac, “I will be with you and bless you.” He certainly did. In one year, he sowed and reaped one hundred-fold. God’s grace provided solutions during times of great conflict. In that grace Isaac and Rebekah conceived Jacob and Esau after twenty years of barrenness.

God then promised grace to Jacob and Esau. He specifically told Jacob, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go…” (Genesis 28:15). God did keep him and blessed him. After twenty years of serving his unscrupulous uncle Laban, God provided grace, and he came out blessed with much livestock.

David provides us with an abundance of testimonies whereby God answered him in times of need. God provided grace and strength to wrestle his sheep from the mouths of lions and bears when he was a shepherd boy. God provided grace to defeat the giant Goliath with a sling and stone. God provided grace and protection as David ran from King Saul for several years. God provided grace and wisdom as he governed Israel as king for forty years. We can glean a wealth of wisdom and encouragement from David as we read his journal—His psalms. We can clearly see why the people called Jesus son of David.

The New Covenant then overwhelms us with stories of God pouring grace upon His people.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth…16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:14-18).

We read an abundance of stories in the book of Acts about God pouring out His grace and truth in a variety of circumstances. Yes, God will provide grace and truth to guide you in every situation you can find yourself in.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

5 Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.

6  This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

7  The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!  Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

(Psalm 34:4-8)

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

(2 Corinthians 12:9)

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

What solution do you need today? As you call upon the Lord place your trust in God. Invite the Holy Spirit to comfort and strengthen you and whisper God’s encouragement to your heart. Believe for God’s solutions. Open your heart to receive all God wants to pour into it.

Calling Upon God for His Grace to Find Truth

We often wonder, what is truth? Can truth be found? Many in our world will tell us truth is relative, that “you have your truth and I have mine.” However, Jesus came to reveal the powerful dynamics of grace and truth.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth...16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:14-18)

RELEVANCE

People today like to construct their own truth. However, consider some wisdom from the Bible.

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. (Proverbs 26:12)

 

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

(Isaiah 5:21)

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (Romans 8:5-7)

Truly, God’s grace will lead us to truth. We just have to be hungry for it. God looks for us to turn to Him to discover truth. In fact, Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth three times.

The prophet Joel speaks realities of God’s grace. He offers great grace and solutions to life’s problems to those who truly turn to Him with a heart to exchange our shortcomings and sin for His grace, truth and protection. Hear God crying out from His heart of love. He desires to bless us with abundant grace!

“Now, therefore,” says the Lord,

“Turn to Me with all your heart,

With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”

13 So rend your heart, and not your garments;

Return to the Lord your God,

For He is gracious and merciful,

Slow to anger, and of great kindness;

And He relents from doing harm.

(Joel 2:12-13)

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

Declare to God that you are receiving His love and forgiveness for walking contrary to His ways, and now turning towards Him to receive His love, grace and truth. Ask Him to teach you His ways, which are higher than our ways. Meditate on Isaiah 55:6-13. Receive God’s promises into your heart. Reflect further on the scriptures below and receive God’s love as you do.

Receiving God’s Grace and Truth to Overcome Shame

Shame, guilt and condemnation are feelings we all deal with from time to time. God’s grace, however, empowers us to overcome such feelings. It’s a truth we can bank on! It simply takes knowing God’s truths and trusting God to overcome falsehoods attacking us. As we call out to Him for victory He enables us to overcome. He delivers us from feelings of guilt, shame and condemnation. This is His promise and part of His covenant of grace and truth. He truly wants to offer us mercy. He just waits for us to call upon Him in faith and truly trust Him. He then brings us into a greater realm of freedom of soul!

Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you;

And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you.

For the Lord is a God of justice; Blessed are all those who wait for Him…

…He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry;

When He hears it, He will answer you.

(Isaiah 30:18-19)

RELEVANCE

Shame comes from a variety of sources. Maybe we’ve done something we regret. However, God forgives us unequivocally. He offers us real freedom from such feelings. Shame also comes from internalizing forms of oppression put upon us by others. Like what?

Consider that other people around us have issues. So, we need to see that other people’s problems are not ours. Neither are their biases, ignorance or misinformation they might want us to believe. We also need to let their insults and inappropriate comments fall to the ground.

So, we’re talking about deconstructing oppressiveness in which the world and the devil try to entrap us. God’s grace and truth always provides comfort and answers. And God’s grace is sufficient to enable us to overcome and free us from all negative feelings. Hear His heart. “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Yes, God’s grace is powerful. Truly, His grace is greater than our shame! We simply need to embrace it. We also can renounce criticism, false accusations and erroneous judgment that brings us down. Truly, as our Heavenly Father’s children and joint heirs with Christ, we stand boldly before the Lord in the confidence of His grace. So, embrace God’s grace and truths. Meditate on the truths of His Word. Believe in your heart and declare His realities.

REFLECT, RELATE AND RESPOND

Meditate on these scriptures. Speak these words into your heart as your own. Ask the Holy Spirit to flood your heart with God’s love. Receive His grace and truth washing you and refreshing you inside. Thank God for His love and freedom pouring into your soul. Express gratefulness for God’s grace.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:17)

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16)

“The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6)

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You. (Psalm 9:10)
